Analyse the ways in which meaning is constructed in this media product?

On  the image, there is a bold headline in a white font on what looks like a red ribbon to stand out the slogan they are going for. Next, there are a selection of lipsticks on the image all piled up on top of each other, in the background there is a few smudges and pieces of material. Then there is a bold black cover line underneath the headline saying what the product is. The woman on the image is a white female with almost plenty skin wearing the lip colour and at the bottom of the image there is a text about a celebrity and that she wears the lip colour. Also the main colours of this image is red and pink to best fit their target audience they are trying to reach.

These can create meaning to the audience and people viewing the image. For example, the text at the bottom says that someone wears the lip colour and most likely it will be a celebrity and this creates meaning because by saying that a celebrity wears the lip colour will get other females to potentially buy the lip colour because if a celebrity wears something, then people make the assumption that it must be a good product. The text is so small because the producers of the image think that people will already know who the female is on the image from their target audience, so they put the text on for het people who don't know who she is and the reason it is so small is because the producers don't want the that text taking the audiences view off the main product which is the lip colour. The female 'Georgia May Jagger' is presented as almost pale is to get people to notice the lip colour that she is wearing and this creates meaning because they are trying to portray that if people buy this lip colour and wear it, then they will stand out from the crowd and the way Georgia May Jagger is presented wit her facial expressions could mean that it can help in a sexual way and this would also create meaning because no only the females will want it to try and get a partner but also a male could think that if he buys this product for his partner then she will look as sexy as Georgia May Jagger is on the image.

Next, the use of the material and the smudges on the left, and the solid lines on the right in the background with the other lip colour products also create meaning because this can show the targeted audience that all other lip colours smudge and can ruin materials and stain but the solid red lines on the right behind Georgia suggest that their product is solid and doesn't smudge, which all females would want from that sort of product. The pile of the lip colours with the main product on top also creates meaning because it shows that their product is the best and it is better then all the other branded products and females will potentially buy the product because they will believe that this product will be better then all the others. The producers used the colour red because red has connotations of love and romance which is what they sort of what the product is meant for. This could mean that the producers care for the targeted audiences appearances and wants everyone to be happy and have the same chance as everyone.

The cover line is in a bold black text to stand out says that the lip colour is '16 hours kiss proof 'which could mean that if females wear this lip colour, then they would be kiss proof for 16 hours because everybody will be over her kissing the female because she is wearing this lip colour and that is what the producers of the product and image are trying to portray to the targeted audience. The main headline and text is in a sans-serif font to try and get to all the females and the headline "Wild Without Trace" could suggest that the target audience will go wild for this product and there will be no trace because it will all be sold out and gone because the audience will rush to get it. We are also presented with quite a few Union Jack flags in teh background of this print advert that is presenting Rimmel London and the use of the Union Jacks could suggest that when you wear this lip colour, then you will feel proud to be British and it also suggests that this is a British brand.

Within the advert, there could be a few messages that the audience could decode. The first one would be the product being worn and when the audience sees the young female wearing the lip colour and looks really nice, then they will think if they wear the product then they will look like the young female on the advert. The next one would be the female herself because the audience might see the female and think that the product is only for girls who want an exciting life or 'wild' and this can be shown by the females clothing, appearing as torn and this suggest that she might be a rebel and wants her character to be portrayed as a rebel. She is also drink for what looks like a can and the producers have put her drinking from a can to suggest that the product is really durable and doesn't wear off after drinking. Also the audience wouldn't think that the advert is sexist because the product is mainly for females, hence the reason for the female model and not a male one but the product could also be for males too because they would buy the product for their partners because they would think if they brought it for there partners then they would look like that. The female models characteristics and facial expressions shows visual language to represent the product ' Provocalips 16hr lip colour' in quite a feminine way to best fit their target audience which is 'young females' and the model shows off the product in a really good way by showing what the audience would look like and feel wearing the product and this gives the audience a clear visualization of the product.

There could be some Oppositional readings which could suggest that the audience might think the advert is sexist because it only shows a female wearing the product and not a male wearing the product and this could affect the company and brand by putting a negative appearance on them and therefore, the audience will share this information and this could potentially put customers of the brand and the product. There would also be some Negotiated reading and this would include of the audience understanding the meanings and the properties it holds but then they would chose not to buy it and this can be caused by the stereotype of the that only females can wear this lipstick and not males. Also presenting the lipstick in the way you would find it in the shops would also benefit the brand because then the targeted audience can find it easier and buy it instead of trying to find it without any clue of what it look like.

In conclusion, the final meaning of this print advert is for is for the lipstick and its main audience which is young females and show that if girls wear this product, then they can be more attractive to males and be more 'wild' out and about and potentially be more girly too.
